What should I look for when choosing a personal trainer or coach?

When looking into signing up with a personal trainer, your first and top priority should be to do yourself due diligence in assuring that you’re choosing the right personal trainer for you.

First, look at their credentials. All trainers should have a certification in their field. This guarantees that they have met certain standards of professionalism and competence from a trustworthy and accredited organization. Ask for references or talk to others who have personal experience working with the PT you are considering. You will also want find out what that PT has to offer that will benefit you and what you are trying to achieve. By asking around and doing some research, you may eliminate a few potential trainers/coaches right off the bat. Remember, your time is valuable and just because a trainer is in shape does not mean they know how to get others into shape. Don’t rush the process of choosing the personal trainer that is right for you. Make sure you are 100% confident in your decision. After all, your health should be your top priority!

Another big factor when choosing a trainer/coach is personality. If you’re going to be spending time with this person, you want to make sure that you mesh well and feel comfortable with them. Chances are that if you aren’t enjoying your sessions or feel uncomfortable with your trainer, you won’t stick with it. A PT should be both motivating and encouraging while holding you accountable in all areas related to reaching your goals. Either way, take time to personally talk to the trainer and get a feel for their style to see if it jives with what works for you.

Last but not least, make sure the trainer/coach you are choosing understands your goals. Part of retaining a fitness professional should be like seeking a form of education for yourself. If a trainer says “trust the process” or “this has worked with past clients” then what is that actually teaching you? Nothing!, because you want to know “why” – – there should be no secrets. Your trainer should be asking you for feedback and providing explanations and answers to your questions. These types of things will help them to assess your current state and in getting to know your body. Keep in mind that your trainer needs to know how your body responds and how you are feeling at that given time. It is with all of these variables, and more, that help determine your overall progression.
