Should I train to muscle failure every set?
If you haven’t noticed, there has been conflicting research on whether or not training to failure is beneficial.
Training to failure on every given set can cause “central fatigue.” Central fatigue, is a form of fatigue that is associated with changes in the synaptic concentration of neurotransmitters within the central nervous system which affects exercise performance and muscle function.
If your performing all your sets to failure, you will fatigue your nervous system and hinder your ability for long term growth.
For these reasons, I recommend using failure sparingly. Start with strategically planning a training program that allows you to implement failure without taxing your CNS.
On your hypertrophy days, use failure training on your final set of each exercise and access how you recover from your workouts.
Above all, listen to your body!
